Movie Night at Mountview Park

Well its been awhile since I have blogged about what has been going on, right now I am playing catch up with what has happened lately.

Last Saturday we attended the second annual movie night hosted by the ward 8 community council.

The council and all its volunteers need to be commended for a great job that they did and by the looks of it all the people that attended had a great time.

We had the waterfall bus there along with waterfall cars # 1 and 4.

The bus served as a command center for the council, along with a meet and greet

This was also the launch of a new project for us to tackle, but more on that later.

You will love what we are planning.

Satellite Internet for The Waterfall Bus

Well the Team Hamilton Waterfall Bus, became a fully functional rolling command center tonight with the addition of its own Internet Satellite dish from Motostat.

This has been 5 years in the planning stages, and came to a conclusion tonight as the dish was installed tested, debugged and then my driver took her home for the night.

The last few weeks has also been a very busy one, as lots of plans have been made, meetings had and ideas thrown around the table about how we can use the bus.

" We are only limited by our imaginations", is a common phrase that I have been using, as I have been challenging everyone to think outside the box on this one.

True to the way I operate, as soon as it is wrapped we will hit the road and start to travel around the Province, maybe with a concrete plan, or flying by the seat of our pants and see where it takes us.

Our own Economic Development office in Hamilton is aboard, and we have had some very constructive talks on how we can use the bus to advertise our City.

Ec Dev, has also made some partnerships with others who literally want to "jump on the bus", when we hit the road with our travelling road show.

Mark my words, this will be truly remarkable.

Physician Recruitment, Tourism, Eck Development ( my wife's spin on it !!), you name it, it is all connected.

Will it work?

It already is.

The bus has quietly been used for years now, and the last few weeks it has been seen all over the city by people, gearing up for the grand launch when she is wrapped.

We have done food drives, one just last weekend, it was a command center for the Police Charity golf tourney, it will be used this weekend at a community parks fundraiser, the list goes on.

This summer it will appear all over the place, summer fairs, carnivals, you name it, anything and anywhere the bus can be seen or used at is what my goal is.

Once it is wrapped it immediately becomes Hamilton's Mobile Consulate.

Imagine the bus rolling up to a company that has expressed interest to our Ec Dev office in moving to Hamilton, and instead of them coming to the plain same old stuffy boardroom office, our mobile mansion comes to them instead!

Once they see the beauty of the wrapped bus with our waterfalls on it, we bring them inside and show them our presentation via computer or TV, and serve a nice lunch in a very casual setting.

As a company president and CEO, I know all the wow factors that impress me, and this would impress the hell out of me!

Its all in the delivery.

Much more to come, but when we hit the road, the world will stand up and take notice as Hamilton will be out front blazing a path no one has ever been down before.

Chris' Cats Club

I have been spending some time at Ivor Wynne Stadium lately, today I was watching the huge crane fixing the light standard, and yesterday I was down looking at the progress being made with my suite.

On the way home I had an idea, so I stopped into the office and chatted with the Cats about it.

Hence a new idea was born on the spot, our underpriviledged children will be the recipients.

More details to come, but I think you know what I am going to do !

Busy little waterfallers, all of us....

Its been a crazy time lately, we have been very very busy doing so much in relation to the waterfall initiative, it is really starting to take off.

I had a very interesting chat with someone the other day, that said something interesting to me, in that they and others have said that the waterfall initiative is the single biggest thing this City has seen come along in a long long time to change its image.

It is the talk of the town others have said, even folks from out of town have said the same thing.

Our website traffic is literally through the roof, and it has very quickly outgrown what I have thought that it would.

People though are stepping up to the plate, people from all over, and even politicians are getting aboard ready to help out in any way possible.

I am very quick though to point out that the people are the ones that should be thanked, they have stepped up to the plate and taken ownership of this, I am simply the one that gave it the kick it needed.

And speaking of kicks, Waterfall Car #4 hit the streets running last week, we already had it at Ancaster Heritage Days where it had its public unveiling.

Today we worked on the bus all day getting it ready for its wrapping, and I am starting to train Dan on the ins and outs of all the mechanical systems that it has. This thing is a very complicated coach, man it must have 100 switches in it !

On that note, I am also going to be purchasing 2 trailers, one for the cars and a double axle beast to pull behind the bus to be used at fairs, events, etc...

This way it will be easier to haul chairs, tables, and our HUGE BBQ around.

We also had one of our members give our first school presentation this week!!!!

Lots happening and lots more to come, the best is still ahead of us.

Bring The NHL To Hamilton Rally

Yes, the rally is still a go, more so than ever now.

My commercials will start to air tomorrow on CH, so either watch them there or on my website!

As soon as the ruling was released today I was notified by the media, and approaching 1am, I am still going through the judges 21 page ruling on the case.

Being in the legal field for 26 years, I have read my share of documents, this one is no different, there are some interesting statements in this one.

I will post what I and I repeat I take from it at a later point.

The biggest thing that everyone needs to take from this, is not what a legal opinion can or cant do to what we want, but more so its what we need to do now as a City and a people.

There are some very clear things that now must happen, some I can share, others I cant.

The biggest thing for everyone to know, is that we cant give up, lord knows that I am not giving up, if anything I am looking at this in even a bigger picture now, more than ever.

More to follow.

1972

In 2 hours we will have our 1st meeting for our upcoming Rally to be held on June 19th for bringing an NHL team to Hamilton.

I have been working quietly on this for awhile now, but the one thing that we need to do is to recreate 1972.

Remember how the Country basically grinded to a halt during that series?

All the schools, and business's closed and that's what we need to do here.

I personally will be closing my office so my staff can attend the rally.

We need everyone to be on the same page for this one folks, we need to have all the enthusiasm that we had during the Summit Series, remember?

Anything else would not be acceptable.

Lets fill the streets, and show the world that hockey deserves to be in Hamilton!!!

http://www.bringthenhltohamilton.com/

RALLY UPDATE

We had a great first meeting and got a lot of the issues out on the table for discussion.

As this rally will be the most important rally this city has ever seen, it is critical that the mayor's office take leadership on this issue and make this the biggest and proudest moment this city has had something to cheer about in a long time.

We only have 9 days to pull this off, it has been done before when Mayor Bob Morrow held a rally that 20,000 kids attended.

Yes people outside the mayor's office could do this, but this would not be the correct thing to do here, in this case the world will be watching and it is incredibly important that the Mayor takes leadership on this issue.

The team is in place, our game plan is set, we just need the mayor to officially set it in motion.

This could be a very defining moment for our great city.

Waterfall Car #4 is now in the shop

Just a note to let you know that the next waterfall car headed into the shop yesterday to be wrapped, it should be ready by Friday!!!

UPDATE

I just got back from 3M, the wraps have now been laminated and are drying on the wall, here are some pics of them, they look great!!!!

A Busy Day, Fingers are Crossed

Today will be a busy day that is for sure, I had better bring extra cell phone batteries!!!

The bus is already down at Dundas Golf, for the annual Hamilton Police Charity Golf Tournament, where it will be used once again as a command center for the staff.

I will also be down that way today to start a new project involving our City Parks that will be a major undertaking and huge boost for all Hamiltonian's.

I will also be visiting City Staff for a 45 cent tour of the new parks trailer, and oh, yes just another small thing, I will be anxiously awaiting a phone call about what is happening in Phoenix today, as this will also be a major event that will make me go one way or the other with some events planned!!!

MAD 4 Maddie

Up at 4:30 yesterday and off and running for the second annual MAD 4 Maddie walk/run which was held this year at Dofasco Park.

Maddie's walk this year was attended by hundreds of people, of all ages, and even a few dogs to!

It was a perfect day, crystal clear skies, and it even managed to get warm enough that people started to take their coats off in the afternoon.

The 5 k walk/run started without a hitch and off everyone went!

After the walk/run was over everyone came back to the park end enjoyed excellent food and drink and entertainment.

And speaking of that, I have been to literally hundreds of these types of events, and I can tell you that the organizers have done an incredible job, the entertainment was top notch.

There where motivational speakers/comedians/and 3 or 4 bands!

Brian Melo was there as well, and I had a chance to have a few great conversations with him as well.

Brian finished the show off, and he wrote a song just for Maddie and this day.

The song he wrote he called "move or be moved"

Brian said that there was something about Maddie's story that really touched his heart.

It was a great song, and during it something happened that was at first a scare but then after wards I realized what actually probably happened might not have been a coincidence at all.

Maddies picture that was on stage all of a sudden had a beam of sunlight that somehow came through an opening in the tent of the stage set up and shone on her face.

That is such a great picture of Maddie, she is so beautiful there, she had a great smile, and the sunbeam made you look at her even more.

I am sure I was not the only person that noticed it I saw others also commenting on what was happening as well.

While Brian was singing the song, the wind picked up and started to move Maddies picture around.

So much so that a couple of people by the stage ran to secure it.

It hit me then that this might not have been a coincidence at all, but rather Maddie was reaching out to us that where all there for her.

I looked over at Sharon, Maddie's mom whom was crying now, Brian's song and this moment was a very moving experience.

Brian could not have picked a better title for the song "Move or be moved "

It was only after I left and was driving home that it all started to sink in.

At home later that night and watching the video I recorded of the event, the full impact of that very special moment really started to hit home.

Maddie was still reaching out and touching all of us that where there, in her own special way.

This brave and un-selfish child that was taken from us so young has done more than anyone can imagine, it is something almost hard to imagine for a child her age to have done what she has, and is still doing.

Maddie you touched us all that day, and you especially touched my heart in a big way that day.

It was a very special and emotional day for everyone, I for one was deeply moved by this experience and will never forget it.

We will continue your work and to fulfill your dreams.

Bring The NHL to Hamilton

On a windy, chilly but beautiful Sunday afternoon, two devoted Hamiltonian's headed off to ask Canada's musical ambassador to hockey if he would consider coming to Hamilton to sing a song or two at a planned rally coming up at Copps.

Who are these two?

That wont be disclosed at this time.

Who did they go see?

That is secret to.

But, if you cant figure it out check your passport.

More info will be posted soon on my hockey website.

Thank-you for your letters of support

I want to thank everyone from near and far whom has taken the time to write letters to me and also the Spectator about the very negative and one sided article written about me recently.

It is this kind of outpouring of love and emotion that I hold dearest to me, letters from complete strangers, people I have never met and also people that know me throughout the community.

Well over 200 people have now taken the time to write me and tell me also how upset they are over this.

Your support in these times is very appreciated by everyone, I also want to thank Councilor Terry Whitehead for publicly speaking about this at council last night also.

The Dark Side of Philanthropy

Well if you read today's Spec, you will see that I am apparently now in a new vocation that of a " Lobbyist"!!!!!!

That though must be only a short term job for me because apparently I am running for Mayor also!!!

Quick, let me go find myself to tell me the news!

The downside to this lunacy is that a planned meeting today at 2pm to announce a major philanthropic donation to a not for profit organization with connections to the City so strapped of cash will now have to be cancelled.

I will be contacting my legal counsel and will report back to you in the near future.

Calling all Hamilton artists

Okay, I am going to let you in on maybe a few things that I am going to do with the waterfall project AHEAD of time in year 2 of my city of waterfalls initiative.

Now, this is something that should excite every artist out there and also that of the artistically minded individual.

I need EVERY waterfall painted in an oil and also water colour.

Yes that is right all 125 of them, so that's 250 paintings in total.

After that and most likely before that we will also engage in holding some art exhibits of the works throughout the city.

What other kind of art can we do that involves our waterfalls?

We are only limited by YOUR imaginations.

This should be a major boost for the art community, and also open the door up for an entire new industry and work for our artists.

The first 250 paintings are already sold, I will buy all of them!

This could in fact be the biggest art sale ever made in one day!

So spread the word folks, if you are an artist give me a call!!

City of Waterfalls Documentary

Today, I reached an agreement in principle with a videographer whom wants to shoot a documentary for a major media organization about my waterfall initiative.

It will take 1 year to complete it and it sounds very exciting to say the least!!

City of Waterfalls 1st Anniversary

WOW!

What a year it has been.

1 year ago I had an idea to " Brand" our City as " The City of Waterfalls"

It all simply started out as an idea, a dream, a vision.

Nothing out of the ordinary for me, as an entrepreneur its a thought pattern and language I speak every day.

In my 26 years in business and community involvement I have done this countless times, and will continue to do so.

But, my little voice was yelling at me that this one was different.

It was telling me that this was going to be huge and a home run.

My little voice was starting to hurt my ears so much I almost had to use ear plugs at times!

What I did not know, or dream, was how big and how fast this entire project would grow.

It has gathered attention around the world, media, politicians, my peers in the marketing field, and grass roots citizen involvement way beyond my wildest dreams.

It takes an outsider that is totally new to what is going on to really express their feelings and then you see, hear and feel the movement that is happening.

When people start to move here, and travel every weekend from hundreds of miles away, that is telling you something.

When Hamiltonian's start to grab onto this and OWN it, it is a time when any marketing person will say " we have arrived".

The absolute groundswell of support from people is absolutely astonishing, so much so, that many people are saying this should be on the top of the list at every election in the future.

A very distinguished and well respected Hamiltonian, took me aside and whispered to me the other day, that what we have here is magical, it is " By the people, for the people."

Truer words could not have been spoken.

When one looks at radical and explosive growth in a business or any community group or organization, and or in any business, one always looks at building it " From the ground up", versus from the top down.

As a marketing person and company owner, I can tell you that my money is ALWAYS on the ground up approach, as following this model you are simply steering the ship versus powering it.

Having your customers or in this case the citizens power your idea or vision is a one in a million scenario, so much so, that one marketing person told me that what I have here is a " once in a lifetime opportunity".

Meaning, they would have given anything to have been involved in this, you see in the marketing field, when you have your target audience grab ahold and run with your product you have achieved something that only a handful of campaigns ever do in ones lifetime.

This is what has happened and will continue to happen into the future.

Every day I receive emails from people wanting to get involved with the movement, so much so that we are preparing to double our waterfall walks for this year.

A internationally acclaimed branding expert has communicated with me over the year and has said some very flattering comments on what is going on as well.

The best is yet to come, how far we have come in 1 year is absolutely amazing, but the biggest thing and to what I owe the most thanks, is to the people.

This is all about the people, everyone of us, this is not about me or anyone else.

No-one owns this project, except you.

I could not be prouder of fellow Hamiltonian's and the countless visitors who come in daily to see our waterfalls and get involved.

Year 2 will be even better, the initiative will double if not triple in size, more investment, more staff, and a bigger picture of where we are going with this.

The greatest thing in all of this, is that I am simply giving people what they want.

Nothing is forced.

The people decide our future, they tell us what we should do and what they want.

Every day I get up to 200 emails from people around the world all talking about the waterfall initiative, and how proud it makes them feel.

Hamilton, stand up and take a bow, The City of Waterfalls is on the map forever.

The Hamilton Civic League

Readers of my blog will remember when I blogged about the Guelph Civic League when they came to Hamilton, the original blog can be found here http://chrisecklund.blogspot.com/search?q=guelph+civic+league

Well just a couple hours ago I received a facebook invitation to join what sounds like an attempt to form a like minded copy of what happened in Guelph, and it is being called The Hamilton Civic league.

Mark my words folks if this new League is successful in forming and growing politics as you know will be changed in this City forever.

Why you ask do I think this way?

Well if you google what happened in Guelph, it was a grassroots movement to change the way politicians voted on local issues, and wow did they ever make change.

There are however incredibly different issues between Guelph and Hamilton, and this alone will be a HUGE challenge to differentiate between different parts of the City.

I remember the night of the meeting back in March, it was a very interesting presentation, if the group here in Hamilton can form and grow along non-partisan lines, and also keep away from special interest groups and ideologies, then it has a chance.

Every career politician in this City should pay attention and take notice of what is happening.

Interesting times to say the least, I wish the group all the best, nothing beats grassroots involvement.

Bring The NHL To Hamilton

In 2008 you may remember that I launched a new website and social media initiative to spread the word about Hamilton's incredibly rich hockey history and Hamiltonian's love of the game.

I hired veteran Hamilton Spectator reporter Tim Miller to start to research the articles for the site, and he has been very busy finding the deeply buried jewels of the game and reporting them back to us to read.

Within the last week with all the frenzy on our latest hope to land a team, needless to say the website has been extremely busy.

Our Facebook group alone grew by 407 people in the last 24 hours.

Lots more to come stay tuned, visit the website and join the Facebook group as well!!

Waterfall Car #4 is in the planning stages

This time I am throwing the responsibility over to my driver Dan.

Dan whom has also being taking a LOT of pictures lately will have the responsibility of designing the entire theme and pictures this time around.

The car should be amazing, simply based on what he has been using for equipment in the last year.

You may remember that I bought one of the very first new Canon Mark II cameras, which if you did not know is Canon's most powerful camera it makes in the world.

Dan called me today and told me that while at Websters Falls this afternoon, he was pulling in pictures of 35 Meg.

In English, that means 1 picture would roughly fill 25 floppy disks.......

Can you say POWERFUL???!!!

Like I said before, if we are going to do a project like this, we might as well GO BIG OR STAY HOME.

We all know Dan will do a GREAT job at it also!!!

Well he had better because he knows that when he is done he will also be planning Waterfall Car #5, which is sacred territory in that it will be the first of my Mercedes-Benz's to be wrapped.

He will then plan the bus, which in itself will be a MONSTER of a project.

No pressure Dan.... :)

No Man's Land

I once described myself to people as someone in No Man's land at times when it comes to dealing with environmental issues.

The case in point was Red Hill Creek and when we where trying to build the expressway.

Here I was a HUGE supporter and founding member of " The Get Hamilton Moving " task force, so it was no secret that I wanted to get the road built.

But at the same time this project got me interested in the environment, so I bought a greenhouse and basically set up my own tree nursery.

What followed was a crash course in Native Carolinian Trees, several visits to the St.Williams Tree Nursery, long talks with Hamilton Conservation Authority Staff, and a lot learned along the way.

A wily old politician told me to be careful, because if I talked to much about the environment people would " LABEL" me.

What he meant was that people would no longer take me seriously, label me as a tree hugger and possibly start to ignore me.

That was 10 years ago, and I am happy to report that no-one has been successful at applying that label.

But, at the same time, it was interesting to also learn that many of my fellow " Movers and Shakers" in the City would not get involved in anything environmental at all.

This I found strange and curious and to this day it is an opportunity that many fail to realize what we could do if we applied all the money and power to what we do in our day to day lives into doing something to help the environment.

It is unfortunately a missed golden opportunity for many people.

There is something to be said for simply picking up garbage, it is a very gratifying experience to say the least.

Planting a tree and watching it grow over the years is another.

Restoring what Mother Nature gave us to its beautiful glory is good for the soul.

Last weekend I hosted my annual clean-up, in partnership with the City, and 50 people came out to pitch in.

The experience was obviously a very gratifying one, as I got several emails saying how good people felt for doing this afterwards.

Well here is where also the problem lies.

The biggest complaint from Tourists visiting our waterfalls is garbage.

Heck some waterfalls and parking lots do not even have garbage cans!!

Yesterday I ventured out once again to a few waterfalls, and it was disgusting what I saw.

We are literally talking decades of illegal dumping, heck one place even has a circa 1985 Dodge Caravan rolled down the escarpment!

Councillor Collins brought this up in council this week and several others are very aware of this problem as well.

With the world slowly beating a path to Hamilton to see its waterfalls, its embarrassing on how some of them look.

What we need is a HUGE shift in thinking, and basically an understanding of the problem by everyone.

That includes Hamiltonian's and City politicians.

Some of the areas are basically to dangerous for weekend volunteers to get into.

We need heavy equipment in places, in others we need skilled people that have the ropes and gear to scale down the escarpment face.

But what we need the most is for people to get involved, not only in just cleaning up but also in changing peoples thought patterns on littering.

My fellow " Movers and Shakers" in this City can also help out by getting involved as well, come to a clean up party, talk to your friends, get back with mother nature herself.

The responsibility lies with each and everyone of us, there is nothing to be embarrassed about here folks.

Garbage everywhere

Wow, what a clean up.

50 people and at least 50 garbage bags collected, 8 tires, batteries, jugs of chemical, carpets, car parts, etc...

Some garbage has been there for over 30 years.

It was like we where the first people to ever clean this area up.

Ever since I started my waterfall initiative, this has become clearly evident that garbage is our biggest problem.

It is the #1 complaint that tourists tell me.

So, this has me on a new mission basically.

We have made some major inroads so far, last Saturday was the first official clean up that we have performed, we have done a few in the past where they where needed the most, my driver has been out and about cleaning almost daily when visiting the waterfall parking lots, as they have become a dumping ground for people.

It's so bad that I am starting to think maybe the next waterfall car will actually be a pickup truck so we can haul the garbage away.

The biggest thing is awareness, and I have made the City councillors and staff very aware of this problem.

So far, I have had excellent co-operation with City staff and councillors, this is a topic I think we can all agree on.

In looking at the garbage collected it has become clear that a lot of it has been there a very long long time.

We are collecting pop cans and bottles of products that have not been made in this century.

What we need to do is to look at this like we have never looked at it before, its like having a new Mercedes with a terrible paint job, an excellent vehicle but sorry to look at.

Certain proposals will be put forth in the near future that I hope will pass, this is a project that needs every ones participation.

I want to thank all the volunteers whom came out, you are the true heroes, the City is a better place with dedicated individuals like yourselves.

The Three Waterfall Cars Together

Well here they are folks all together in one place, the three waterfall cars!!!

Can you guess which is which?

Someone even suggested that we have a contest to see who can spot what car in a certain area!!

Its already creating confusion, my bank manager just called me and said he thought he saw me driving one and started honking and waving only to find out it was a girl driving one!!

Right now my staff are all driving them, they look awesome all together I must say!

A very proud day for all Hamiltonian's!!!

Hamilton Waterfall Car #3 is ready to be picked up

My driver will head down to the wrap shop today and pick up my 3rd waterfall car which has been completed!!!

A proud day for our City!!!

Hamilton Waterfall Car #3

She is coming along nicely, and may even be ready to be picked up today, as they are working ahead of schedule as of yesterday!!

But, with the rain, we will most likely let her sit and dry for the night, better safe than sorry I always say.

Here is a picture of the hood decal waiting to be applied, that is Billy Green Falls you are looking at. Billy Green Falls is one of the hidden gems, not many people get to see her.

Goodbye my little friend

I was born into an era in time that I could not ask for anything to be different, meaning I feel blessed to be the age I am and born into this world in the year 1963.

What does all this mean?

Well in just one simple explanation of time, I was born at a time where if you where a boy, you got involved in cars and motorbikes, anything that had an engine, or wheels.

Which leads me into why the title of this blog is titled the way it is.

When I wake up tomorrow my trusted tow vehicle of the last almost decade will be gone from my house, my driver is showing up early and will be taking her into the wrap shop in Burlington where she will be outfitted with her new dress and will emerge at the end of the week as Hamilton Waterfall car #3.

The car in question is my 2000 Honda CRV, or what I would sometimes refer to as " The little sewing machine"

It served us well while we where on the road, we went through 3 motorcoaches, but the little sewing machine was always there being towed behind them, she saw a lot of duty on the road, she spent a LOT of time in the States, sometimes up to 4 months in a row in Florida, she even had the privilege of being on the worlds fastest super speedway, that's right she got to drive the high banks of Talladega while we where at the spring race in Alabama in 2006.

She has been towed to many a NASCAR race, Daytona, Atlanta, Indianapolis, Dega, she has been on the beaches in Florida, and all over the place behind the bus.

Being towed behind the bus must be a very noisy and smelly place for any car, the big Cummins diesel belching out at her all day and night long, after a hard run she would be mighty dirty and smelly, but she never complained, she always took it in stride, as she knew what her job and place was.

All my buds had different tow vehicles, but our little Honda served us well, and now that chapter in her life is coming to a close, we don't use her anymore, heck even the other day I was scraping off the decals from NASCAR that where on her windows, and that brought back a lot of memories.

If a car could ever cry or a guy could or would, it was when I was doing that, you see I grew up when men where men and cars where cars, I can get pretty attached to some of my rubber tired friends.

Tomorrow she starts the next chapter in her life, and by the end of the week she will become my 3rd waterfall car in my growing fleet of waterfall cars.

She should feel very very proud in her new job.

If you watch the video from start to finish you will get a better understanding of why the world is beating a path to You Tube to watch her sing.

I wont set this up any further, you owe it to yourself to watch the video and figure out how you feel.

My Annual Easter Egg Hunt

It was Eggsactly what I was hoping for.

I don't know what the numbers where but it was by far the largest Easter Egg Hunt I have hosted so far, a very conservative estimate put the numbers at 300, some say even 500.

All I know is that there where so many children out, that 2 kids got separated from their parents!!

However, once I announced that we had 2 lost children the parents quickly scooped them up!

People came from all over, I even was approached from a couple from London, whom where in Town for a hockey tournament, and decided to come out for my Easter Egg Hunt after a game.

This was the second family that stayed over an extra day, there was one couple whom stayed for my Good Friday Waterfall walk also!

Many thanks to Hamilton City Councilors Terry Whitehead and Scott Duvall for coming out.

If you ever wondered how long it takes to collect 20,000 chocolate eggs, you need to witness this, it was like bees on honey, 10 minutes they where all gone.

Heck I have yet to even have one.....!!

The smiles on the kids faces where incredible, and the countless children whom came up and thanked me made my day and Easter weekend.

Next year you can bet on the same Easter Egg Hunt, but then again since it was so successful, look for me to even expand on it.

I have been thinking on something for many years now, and those that know me, know that I never do anything small.
Over the years I have tossed around to different city councilors about starting some Easter Egg hunts in their areas, as a pre-cursor of bringing together neighbours and hopefully forming them into their own neighbourhood groups.
This folks is how you make a collection of houses into a community.
Yes it can be that simple.
So, if you have a neighbourhood that has a park, let me know and I will see what we can do to host a Easter Egg Hunt in your area next year.

Stay tuned, I think you are going to like what I have planned.

My Innaugral Good Friday Waterfall Walk at Albion Falls

In what seems like a Hamilton only tradition, today I continued the tradition with an invitation to anyone whom wanted to join me on a waterfall walk of Albion Falls and area.

A Minimum of 130 people and 3 dogs joined in the festivities, we had our usual hot dogs, timmies coffee and hot chocolate, and then we where off to explore the beauty that is truly Hamilton and unique to just us and a handful of Cities along the Escarpment.

We toured Albion, Buttermilk, and I showed off the newly discovered Oak Knoll Falls, and also where the other 2 new ones where recently found, Pritchard Road Falls, and also Walnut grove Falls.

We ventured down to the top of the old ski hill at King's Forest where we watched 2 parasailers try to get airborne, but it was to windy for them to safely get going.

Off we went and backtracked down the rail trail, and I showed everyone the old original road from over 100 years ago that we found last year.

Very historic in that this is the road that connected to my families farm 100 years ago down Mud Street.

The day was a great, great day, an old tradition continued on with a new idea that will make sure the Hamilton tradition of Good Friday Walks is one that is continued on for many more generations to come.

New friendships where made, and old friendships where re-affirmed, muscles where stretched and backs even got a little sore, but the spirit was energized by the sun and people around us.

I must have spoken to at least half the group, and one person and I had a very nice talk about my waterfall initiative and this person figured out what I was really up to with it.

Almost one year into my waterfall initiative, only a handful of people have figured out what I am really up to.

Do I have an ulterior motive with my branding initiative?

Yes is the short answer.

Those that get involved figure it out, some quicker than others, but there is much much more going on here than what initially comes to mind.

The thing is I cant tell you what it is, you need to experience it yourself.

A great day was had by all, I have never seen all the parking lots overflowing like they where today.

I host waterfall walks every weekend, so come on out and enjoy " The Waterfall Capital of The World!!!"

Hamilton Earth Quake Relief

Its a tragedy in what is happening in Italy with the devastating earth quakes.

Good friend and former mayor Larry DiIanni, his brother and other community leaders have banded together to start a grass roots support drive for those that are suffering in the affected areas in Italy.

There was already a well attended event at Liuna the other night to which over 100 people showed up and shared thoughts and how help could be organized.

I have offered my support, and through a website that we have just registered and will start to build in the coming days we will try to help get the word out to Hamiltonians on how they can also lend a helping hand.

The website is http://www.hamiltonearthquakerelief.ca

The site will not be live though till next week, but bookmark it for now.

Get Uncomfortable

Step outside of your comfort zone.

Get Uncomfortable.

Its a phrase I used a lot last week and will most likely continue to do so a lot this week and well into the future.

With the economy the way it is and factories closing down, unemployment rising, I look at our City and also its future with great concern.

One thing that I am very concerned about is the inability of city leaders to step outside the box, think differently, take risks, and basically get uncomfortable.

As an entrepreneur I am used to it, its what I am made of.

What I am wondering though is why many of my fellow movers and shakers are retreating into their comfort zone when we should be planning a full frontal all out assault on the problems we are facing.

Oh,....we are doing enough you say?

Tell that to the thousands upon thousands of people that have lost their jobs in this city.

The factories that have closed and will never re-open.

So, should we wait till the economy gets better?

Maybe stick our necks in the sand a little more maybe....

All of Canada and the world is in the same boat we are in, we need to position ourselves ahead, way ahead of every other city and do and think like nobody else has ever done.

RISK.

That's a four letter word.

It seems that lately no-one wants to take any risks anymore.

Everyone wants to simply bunker down and ride this out and maybe ....what wait for the tooth-fairy too make things better?

FEAR

Whoops there is another four letter word.

I fear ice on airplane wings, and drunk drivers behind the wheel. I don't fear failure at trying new things. If I fail? Laugh at me. Point your fingers and laugh.

Oh, while you are thinking that day will come, trust me it wont, but practise pointing and laughing at me anyways and look at the 3 fingers pointing back at you, embarrassed?, you should be.

We are at a defining moment in history and our city, I am going to be calling on a lot of people in the coming months and year to take a very bold and risky idea to get this City ahead.

Don't disappoint me folks, this city can and will prosper and will get back to where it should be, its all up to each and every one of us, each citizen can do his/her own part in economic development and moving this city forward.

As to my fellow movers and shakers in this City, its time you stop simply attending meetings, building your resumes, and thinking that you are helping out, its time to get uncomfortable, ask the hard questions, demand the tough answers get answered, if not by others then lets find the answers together.

Its time for each person to stand up for this City.

Ask yourself what YOU can do.

If nobody will do it, then do it yourself.

Dont wait till " THEY " approve it or tell you it is a good idea.
If you think it has merit then simply do it.

Its time to get uncomfortable folks.

Bringing Our Fallen Home

I have always said that the biggest honour one can do is to serve their own Country.

The second biggest then is to honour those that have paid the ultimate sacrifice.

On Sunday I aong with about 100 Hamiltonians stood on a cold and windy Centennial Bridge overlooking the QEW waiting for the procession to pass underneath.

For we where bringing home Cpl Crooks whom was killed on his 24th birthday.

When a solder dies serving his Country, we as a Country bring him home, its much more than just a few people, for the entire Country mourns and honours his sacrifice.

Having had the honour myself of serving my Country not in one but three services, it hits home very close to my heart and is very personal.

That though is for another day, Sunday was a day where total strangers met on a steel and concrete structure and waved flags in support of our soldiers and our Country

When designers and engineers made these bridges, I bet they never thought that they would turn into a meeting place for people.

Meeting on a bridge and talking to other strangers is a very cold and impersonal thing, add the cold and wind and it feels even stranger.

But then again, the setting was perfect in a way, as it reminded us exactly why we where here in the first place.

The bridge in itself became a memorial for an hour or so that day, and the police even ended up shutting the bridge down to all traffic when the procession got near.

That was telling and very appropriate.

It was over very quickly, we never could see the lead of the procession until it was right on top of us as there is a bend in the road.

The mood was sombre, and quite.

I myself in all my years in the military have lost track of the ceremonies I have attended, they never change, the venues do, but the stark reality of why you are there comes back very quickly.

I will finish this blog and add to it the next few days as there is a lot more to tell.

Hamilton's Largest Easter Egg Hunt is just around the corner

Once again, I will be hosting my annual Easter Egg Hunt at Allison Park, which is located at Upper Wellington and Rymal.

Details can be found here http://www.allisonpark.org/

This year I will have my usual 20,000 chocolate Easter Eggs, that the Easter bunny and his helpers will be spreading around for the kiddies!

It looks like we will see a vast improvement weather wise from last year and previous ones as well, so keep your fingers crossed!

Everyone is welcome, please note that the event starts and ends in 15 minutes, 20,000 eggs can and will be collected by the hundreds of children in no longer than 15 minutes, so don't be late!

The date is Saturday April 11, 2009, and the time will be between 11-12 Noon.

We are hoping for a VIP to attend as our MC this year and have not hammered down the exact starting time yet.

Please come back to see the time but if you get there for 11 a.m., that would be good as the kids can play on the playground equipment.
I have included a picture and a small video from last year, as you can see we had lots of ice and snow, it was freezing with the wind chill as well.
I actually had to get some of my guys to get out and snowblow the park to make a safe area for the kids to collect the eggs from!
Lets hope the Easter Bunny has better weather this year!

See you then!!

Preliminary Art Work for the next waterfall car

Here are the first renderings in from one of our graphic artists, showing a suggested theme for the next waterfall car.

One avenue we are taking is to show how people are involved in what I call " Waterfalling", which is the act of getting out and about and enjoying our waterfalls.

We will fine tune the design each day until we find something that we like!

City of Hamilton Waterfall Car #3

Tomorrow my driver will be heading to pick up the 3rd in a series of cars that I am having wrapped for my waterfall branding initiative for the city.

This car is my original tow vehicle that we used behind our bus.

Its a 2000 Honda CRV, and you may remember that the last 2 weeks we have had it in the body shop getting a facelift, and fixing some scrapes and dents, and this week it was in the dealership getting a mechanical going over as well.

It apparently is now in tip top shape, and ready to head to the wrap shop for a preliminary discussion on the waterfall wrap.

This will take 1-2 weeks as we look at its angles and decide on the theme and pictures to be used.

When its ready I will update you on how it is going and show you some pictures like I usually do.

Actually my designer will have some sketches ready tomorrow night so I will post them here as well.

Don't fall asleep because Waterfall car #4 will be heading in right behind #3!!

Cayuga Motor Speeway

I received a call tonight from Tim Miller, whom you may remember is the author that I commissioned to write a book about Cayuga and its history.

Tim says that the book is almost complete, and we are now down to the nitty gritty.

I am hoping that we can wrap the book up with a visit to the tracks first race of the year, and once we find someone to write the intro we should be good for publishing.

This will be the first time a book has been written about Cayuga, surprising really, its without a doubt the most famous racetrack in Canada, if you just look at the famous racers that have been here, its a who's who in the racing world.

This will also put us on the map, not many tracks have a book written about them, personally I look at this as an honour to do, its just another small way to give back to the racing community and the larger community in general.

When we get down to publishing time which I hope will be in 2-3 months I will give you another update.

Open House at the new YMCA on the Mountain

Its been a long winter and the neighbourhood has been anxiously awaiting the opening of OUR new YMCA in the Allison Park Neighbourhood on Rymal Road.

I stopped by for a tour with my girls today, and I can tell you it was good that we went early, because when we left the place was standing room only!!

We where pleasantly greeted at the door by staff, and tours where quickly arranged into small groups, and we got a tour of the almost finished YMCA.

I can say that from I saw the facility looks very nice, there is an issue with the heat upstairs though, hopefully it is just a glitch in the system, and they can get it turned down!

I ran into a lot of people from our neighbourhood, and even some old friends as well!

I encourage everyone to come and take a look around, and get a membership and enjoy the facilities!

The Guelph Civic League Comes to Hamilton

I attended a very eye opening and fascinating presentation the other night, it was presented by The Guelph Civic League down at the old Customs House.

This in itself could be the night that politics forever changes in Hamilton.

The presentation was actually a huge eye opener for everyone involved, we all saw what could truly happen if a grass roots group of citizens got together and spoke as one collective voice.

Guelph was faced with what was viewed as a very dysfunctional group of councillors at the time, and after this group formed and rallied they tossed out almost the entire City Council!

WOW!

There are many challenges to forming a similar group here in Hamilton, the most important of all is if this is to happen, it has to be formed in a manner of not focusing on a singular issue or what one person or group wants.

That in itself will be the challenge if one of the groups in attendance picks up the ball and decides to run with it.

A very interesting night, mark that night on your calender folks, Thursday March 19, 2009.

A day in history that might have begun an entire new way of thinking and action for this city.

Saving CHCH

I was approached by a CHCH employee and asked what I thought about the impending potential closure of CH and what could be done to save it.

This is starting to turn into a major item for me, it will and is a very tough sell right now, and a lot of people need to understand that my approach to this is not about saving 100 jobs.

If this is looked at as simply saving jobs then the thinking is clouded, and it becomes an emotional issue rather than a business issue.

But if this is looked at as saving a TV station then it has a chance on working.

Some people may not understand the difference here, but trust me they are 180 degree's in stark contrast to each other.

The first will only work if there is million's upon millions of dollars simply thrown at the problem.

The latter ( and best way of doing it) will work only if people can approach this in an unselfish and emotional way.

There is lots of work to do, and some things will become clear by the end of this week.

I have indicated that I will commit financially to this endeavour, BUT only if it has a business case worth exploring.

All Politics Are Local

I have used a phrase for years now to describe my political leanings.

First off its no secret that I am a Conservative.

But, as soon as I blogged about that I got people telling me that I am not simply by the philanthropy that I am practising! ( Thanks Mac Prof..) !

I would also be quick to add that the ideology behind being a Conservative was wiped out when the PM introduced the bailout package across the country.

If anything the Conservative Party is now simply a Liberal Party dressed in blue.

But that is a blog for another time.

I was approached by a member of the media, well known and respected whom commented that they respected how I always support the best candidate for the job, and not necessarily the party.

This will always be what is important to me, I cant and wont wait till " The promise land" appears, and the stars align to give us a landslide victory with all wards/riding's with candidates of the same stripe.

That is simply being Naive.

It's also the single biggest reason why things don't get done at times, people put up " Berlin Walls" around wards and if you are not part of the " club " then you are an outcast.

Well guess what?

I have seen and witnessed these people and their thinking simply vanish, and they themselves been banished due to their extremely selfish and closed mind approach to things.

I have and always will have this Cities best interests in the forefront.

Party Politics have no place here folks, we have way to many problems and way to much work to do, to improve this city.

All Politics Are Local.

People have also asked me what if anything I had to do with Andrea's surprise victory at the leadership conference.

All Politics Are Local.

Andrea Horwath

Its crunch time for the Provincial NDP party this weekend, and the drama is happening right here in our own backyards with the NDP convention and voting for the new leader of the party.

Its also a strange blog for me to do, as it is no secret that I am a Conservative.

But, one thing that I truly believe in is to have a healthy political system in our province and Country, and that is why I am writing this blog.

The NDP party has been clinging on for dear life for years now, and I have been warning my NDP friends that if they don't watch it the Green Party will run up behind them, draft them like Dale Earnhardt Jr. at Daytona and then pass them by.

When I look at the contenders for the job, and listening to them at the convention center tonight I see and hear the same old banter.

But, when I look at Andrea Horwath, what I see is a chance for the party to grow.

This is what the delegates need to truly consider, what person can the party grow around.

This is all about not just the party surviving but growing.

I look at this from a political strategist's viewpoint.

The NDP delegates need to consider what the average voter on the street sees and views as well, not what they themselves believe.

Now here is some advice for all to consider.

What candidate will bring in the most votes at the next election?

There is your answer.

Hamilton Waterfall Car #3 is being sketched, drawn, dreamed

Call it what you will or want, but plans are in the works for our 3rd waterfall car to be completed.

We don't know the theme yet, but we hope we will come to an idea within a week or so, then a week or two to finalize everything.

My goal is 1 month from today it will be complete and on the streets.

One of the great things about this entire project is how we basically just make it up as we go!

We are literally blazing new ground here folks, this has never been done before, and is a heck of a lot of fun if I may admit!

It seems like each and every day we discover something new, a new idea, a new picture, a new angle, a site never seen before, an angle never shot before, an idea never dreamt of or thought of.

There are literally thousands of people now part of this project in fact Facebook alone will be at 10,000 members any hour now!!

The pictures that are coming in daily continue to amaze me and anyone that sees them, it has literally given an entirely new look to this City and also a different feeling as well.

Each weekend we organize a new walk, and that in itself is historical in that these waterfall walks have never been done before.

The sites we see are and how we do it have never been done.

This winter has been an incredibly busy time, we are almost complete in shooting all our waterfalls in a winter theme, heck maybe a 2nd winter themed car is in order maybe?

Hmmmmmm.

Stay tuned :)

The Slate

A Secret Society.

Secret Handshakes.

Secret agendas.

Secret meetings places.

The last few weeks there has been a lot of talk about a secret group of Hamiltonian's making up a new political party of sorts with an agenda on governing the City in the next election.

This has built to a near paranoid line of thinking and acting in the last little bit of time.

A lot of fun has been poked around about it, but some people are taking this seriously, to seriously really as it has some people very concerned and upset.

I want to be very clear about something, I am not part of this group.

I did not start it, or help them in ANY way.

I HAVE met with their leader, he is well known in the City personally and politically, but I declined to get involved with them.

Paranoia is rampant lately, so I even publicly went on the record with The Spec's Nicole McIntyre about this.

She cant write about it as she is covering the breaking news story about Stelco closing down.

So, there it is folks, I am not involved in " The Slate" so to speak, but one of the objects is to put out an entire list of candidates and endorse them, and as I always do this myself each election it was a conflict between us as we already had differences on who we wanted in for the next term.

I am sure more will be written about this in the next few weeks.

Our 3rd Waterfall Book has now been published

Hot off the press and couriered in yesterday, our 3rd waterfall book has now been published, and I made the announcement at the Friends of The Eramosa Karst fundraising dinner last night.

It was a great night, and I presented the very first book to Brad Gautreau Chair of FOTEK.

Brad was instrumental in telling me about a suspected waterfall hiding in the Devils Punchbowl area, and sure enough it was one, and we named it a few months later.

This book is a special book dedicated to our waterfalls and how they look in their winter dress.

It is without a doubt also the hardest book we will most likely ever publish, not to put together but to get out and get the pictures.

The winter of 2008/2009 was a very busy one, I had guys out and about almost every day, in incredibly tough conditions as well.

There has literally been thousands of hours put into this book and I want to thank everyone for their dedication.

The historical record has been set for Hamilton once again!

Saving CHCH

A few weeks ago I was approached by a senior inside employee of CHCH whom asked what I thought could be done to help save the station from what seems like a potential collapse and closing of its doors.

We talked on and off and again tonight for an hour sharing ideas and exchanging thoughts on how this could be done.

You may have heard the stories in the Spec and on TV tonight about it.

Its true folks our beloved CH might be no more.

But, mark my words that we will come out with a station, that is for sure, what it will look like and the size of it and a lot of other details are all still a guessing game at best right now.

Things cant and wont remain the same that is a fair assumption.

There is lots of work to do.

A Pivotal Day for our Cities Future

Today could be the culmination of a 23 year dream of mine, and 2 years of behind the scenes work talking to anyone whom would give me the time of day and had a few minutes to spare.

For today City Council will vote on staff's report on the placement of a new stadium for our Pan Am bid.

For readers of my blog you will note that I talked about this last year that the best placement for our new stadium was at the waterfront.

When Scott Mitchell President of The Hamilton Tiger Cats asked me what I thought of a placement for a new stadium, we talked at great length about the harbourfront, and although our planned consortium of a private/public group never materialized to push this forward, I continued to work on the project behind the scenes along with a few people whom also believed in its location.

Politicians across the board know where I stand on this and many of you have heard my vision and dream.

This is much more than just a stadium, this is an entire revitalization of our west harbourfront.

Yes it is a HUGE plan, and will have many obstacles, buts its one that has the biggest returns and will in the end be something this City can be proud of and play a part in changing the landscape of this City.

This will be the largest infrastructure building project that this City has seen since the industrialization of our city 50 years ago.

It will also signal to the world a huge shift that this City is about to take.

It also is a perfect time to also take advantage of the proposed new National Park for Cootes Paradise.

It fits perfectly with my branding concept that has taken this City by storm as " The Waterfall Capital of The World"

As an entrepreneur rarely does something like this come along that excites me so much, as I can see how all of this can come together in a way that will truly change this great City of ours.

It has been a lot of work so far, but we have not finished the dream, rather what council is about to do hopefully today is to acknowledge that the dream can become reality.

Voting today to accept the West Harbourfront as the preferred location for the stadium is just one part of the equation.

We still need to win the Pan-Am bid.

The latter will move the dream forward dramatically, if we don't win it then it will take longer to fulfill my dream. This though for a later date there are many things to discuss about that.

What all council and politicians from all parties need to think about is how this could move our great city forward in a way it has never moved before.

Think Vancouver pre expo.

Look at it now.

Carry that to Hamilton on a smaller scale, this is what I have been dreaming about for 23 years.

Today could also be a major change in my life personally as I am on the brink of making a major announcement about this project.

Hamilton Meet Waterfall Car #2

Not even 24 hours after being unveiled, Hamilton Waterfall Car #2 was out and about roaming the streets and spreading the good word about our great City.

This time we wrapped the car in a winter theme, and I must admit she looks amazing.

First off, it is an entirely new product from 3M that we used.

It is brand new to the marketplace and we are one of the first to use it!

When you see it you would think that it was still wet and not dry yet.

It even feels different!

Today I was at the Ancaster Food Drive, and many of the volunteers and organizers saw it and had their pictures taken with it as well.

It is much brighter looking than the first car, but you might not be able to tell them apart unless you look closely.

Waterfall car #3 is next, and then 4 and then 5.

All will be in a different theme.

If you happen to see the cars on the road give us a wave, and if you ever want to take your picture with the car when it is parked somewhere, please feel free to do so!

WOW

I don't even know where to begin

WOW......

A councilor called me yesterday and we got talking, I said " WOW " in response to something we where talking about, and very quickly that councilor said " Chris if you don't mind I would rather not hear that word right now...."

The 2 Million tomatoe greenhouse that is being planned for the front of City Hall is one of the most bizarre things I have ever heard.

So strange and so upsetting is this, that yesterday a very well know associate of mine suggested we start legal action against the city to stop it.

That in itself is an incredible statement.

This person is well known to not mince his words, just the fact that he had to think it let alone speak it shows you how off this solarium idea is.

The anger on the streets is also mounting.

The thing is there are at times events that happen that take hold of the public and steer them in a different path.

This could very well be one of them.

The disgust both from Hamiltonian's and councilors alike is incredible at this proposal!

This folks is not a WOW.

A WOW is something that people would drive by and look at and go ...." WOW" !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

A 100 foot waterfall, lit up at night in front of City Hall, with letters that says " Welcome to Hamilton the Waterfall Capital of The World "

That is a WOW!!!!!!!!!!!!!

If council wants to rescue itself from the incredible free fall of public support they need to defeat this motion next wednesday at council.

WOW......

Hamilton's West Harbourfront

Effective immediately I am launching a task force to study all aspects of our west harbourfront and how we can use it for development purposes for a new stadium.

This is nothing new for me, but I think it is time to really bring this to the forefront and look at this area and what we can do with it.

I started to look at this area 2 years ago and it has always been my 1st choice for the location of our new stadium and also for other uses.

This is not going to be easy, but could be a very transformational project for our City.

Meek and mild people need not apply.

Resume stuffers can stay at home.

This will be a very involved, time consuming project that will need Hamilton's biggest thinkers and dreamers.

Think of how Vancouver looked pre 1986 Expo.

Look at it now.

This would be the largest project this City has seen since post-war industrialization took hold of Hamilton.

With the talk about making Cootes Paradise a National Park, by simple land association this project just got a HUGE shot in the arm, and it has not even started yet.

Stay tuned.

If you think you got what it takes to be part of the team, think on how you can contribute to it.

Hamilton's Image is Changing Right Before Our Eyes

A day does not go by, with out hearing from someone about my Branding Initiative for our city.

Today alone there are 50 people on a waterfall walk to 5 waterfalls that I am hosting.

We are using The Ancaster Old Mill as our base camp, its a 4 hour hike, and then back to the Old Mill for dinner and drinks.

This event has attracted people from all over the Province, Hamilton, Toronto, Welland, Cambridge, etc...

Every day people are amazed by the beauty we have in this City, and its untapped potential.

People are coming aboard the project at a furious pace, and it is now growing into something I dreamed it could.

Speaking of image, next week Waterfall Car #2 will be going into the shop to be wrapped in a winter waterfall theme.

Wait till you see it, it is really amazing!

Waterfall Cars #3,4,5 and 6 are next, and then comes the " Ultimate" piece and that is my motor coach.

Keep spreading the word Hamilton, things are changing right before our eyes, we are on a roll with this and there is no looking back now.

FULL STEAM AHEAD!!!!!!!!!!

Hamilton's Citizen of The Year

Wow how fast a year flies by, with the citizen of the year awards being handed out the other day.

My congratulations to Madeleine Levy for winning the award and also a huge congratulations to the others also.

We are so lucky to live in Hamilton, The Volunteer Capital of Canada, Hamiltonian's, so do step up to the plate in this City that is for sure.

Last year I had the distinct honour of being nominated for this award, it was my second time, my first was back in 1998.

On a personal level, being nominated like this although a huge honour in its own, it puts me into a position that I am not comfortable with.

To me I look at what I do as a " duty", rather than something to do in my spare time.

In 1998 I withdrew my name from the finalists, and last year I did not even go to the event.

I almost feel guilty to tell you the truth about these types of things, but enough about this, what I really want to get across is how honoured all those involved should feel to even be nominated let alone be a finalist.

You have done more than 99 % of Hamiltonian's to reach such a high level of recognition amongst Hamilton's movers and shakers, so although not everyone can win, I remember what last years winner Mark Chamberlain said to me last year " We all won"

The journey through life and seeking out its true meaning all comes back to how we take care of each other.

The truest meaning of community is what you are and have done, it is the highest calling and you have accomplished it.

Be proud for what all of you have done, and keep at it, success in life is not measured by plaques on the wall, but rather by the feeling that you get when you help out your fellow man.

That feeling in the stomach and your heart is what is truly your reward.

Its the best feeling in the world, I highly suggest to others to seek this feeling out.

Once you do and feel it, you will know what I mean, you have arrived.

Hamilton is a great City and its proof is in its people.

In the dark of Hamilton

"I saw this on an online blog on Facebook and thought I would share it with everyone, it just goes to show you that there are people out there whom care, really care, and it drives them to do good things like this. This is what life is all about folks."

As we walked down the street this evening my friends and I started our journey by Hess Village, and we strolled down Main Street heading East towards the MacNab Terminal. We were kindly greeted by passers by, 6 of them I believe. They seemed very nice, and struck up a pleasant conversation of such a nice evening. At -26 Celcius that is. They were pushing this old boxed cart, otherwise known as a dubbed "Granny Cart" nickname which I know is not politically correct. I seemed to notice that the one young lady, was carrying a package of styrofoam cups, and she proceeded to ask us if we would enjoy some Hot Chocolate. Now this folks I must admit is a first for me here in the Hammer, to see such dedicated people joining in a walk to help people stay warm. After my friends had graiously accepted the kind gesture, we started to depart but I hesitated, asking kindly if they were representing a group or school, all they could reply was they mostly attend Redeemer College, with one student from McMaster. Now folks, here in the Hammer it is kind of people to move out of the way, occasionally you will find a driver that will wait for you to cross, but for this, I must say is the kindest thing I have seen in a long time. No paper, no mission, just students out there to make a few smiles and bring something back to the community that they co-exist in. I was extremely impressed to the point I had to write this note. Please post your replies, If you were one of those individuals we thank you graciously.

Tiffany Falls

Even in these freezing temps, our waterfall " gang" is out and about taking pictures of our beautiful waterfalls, and I thought that I would share a picture of Tiffany falls with you.

Tiffany Falls, is one of the ones that you can even ice climb in the winter, and with the cold temps here right now hopefully we will see some climbers there shortly!

Take a look at the link here and look at the colours of the water, they are fascinating and truly a winter treasure!!

A One-Two Knockout Blow

My days of mixing it up are long behind me now, but I feel like we just had the equivalent of a knock-out blow with the passing of Chester Waxman last week and Morgan Firestone today.

These gentlemen did so much for this great City of ours, I cant begin to mention how they changed lives and our City for the better.

The philanthropy they practised was enormous.

These two giants are going to be sorely missed in this City.

I had the pleasure of sharing an airplane ride home with Chester Waxman years ago, I was returning from my golfing retreat in Tampa, and he was returning from a business trip and we met in Pittsburgh. It was a nice chat we had, and its that memory that I will carry with me.

Morgan Firestone's family business also gave me my first real job when I got out of high school, I worked at the Firestone Plant, some 28 years ago.

They leave some empty shoes that are going to be hard if not impossible to fill.

Calling All Hamilton Artists

I have started the beginning stages of one of the next phases of my branding initiative and that is to start to capture what our waterfalls look like not only in picture but paintings as well.

This is one of the more long term and expensive phases of the project.

The great thing is though that all the monies spent will be enjoyed not only by people in the short term but for hundreds of years also from now, as pictures and paintings last for a long time and give our future generations a snapshot back to our current time.

I am very excited to announce that I am commissioning artists to paint each and every one of our waterfalls that we have in Hamilton.

My long term goal would be for some day we could have our own art exhibition at the Hamilton Art Gallery showcasing each waterfall in a beautiful painting or picture.

What an incredibly proud day that would be for Hamilton.

So, if you know any artists looking for work have them contact me through the waterfall website, this is the start of a very exciting part of the project, that I look forward to.

You know what the great thing is about this phase of the initiative?

It will never end, we can create art around our waterfalls for hundreds and thousands of years to come.

www.chrisecklund.com

Waterfall Winter Wonderland

WWW, is how we used to start off by telling people a web address, but lately it could also be the new short form for our waterfalls in the winter.

There are many different things we can do with the letters and words, toss them around and even add " Wonderful!"

You can see where I am going with this I am sure.

For the last week, members of our waterfall group, and my staff have been out and about taking some incredible pictures of our beautiful waterfalls.

Each and every day they change their appearance, sometimes you don't even recognize them from a photo.

Last night I started to print off some test shots from our new Canon Mark II, we are pulling in shots over 30 megs in resolution, which is a HUGE number, and using my new 10 ink jet cartridge printer, some of the shots are amazing.

I estimate that since I started the project our group has taken around 20,000 pictures in total, thank god for digital!!!

In the next couple of days with a severe cold snap coming we will be back at it, taking more shots to capture the waterfalls in there ever changing form.

I framed my first picture last night of Sherman Falls, and it looks fantastic.

I encourage everyone to get out during the winter and take in a waterfall they are beautiful year round with a very romantic look to them in the winter framed with ice and snow.

The best is yet to come folks, stay tuned.

Hamilton's Next Waterfall Vehicles

Its been awhile since I blogged last, but we have been very busy coming up with a new design concept for the vehicles.

I think we have settled on what we want now, now comes the next part, that being the layout.

I also did something crazy today, I bought another vehicle for the cause, so now we are at 3 new canvases waiting to be painted.

I say " canvases" because they truly are pieces of art work when completed!

When the first car is ready to be done I will post its proposed pictures up for all to see.

It will truly be something that will be noticed.

Speaking of being noticed, I am extremely humbled in that one of the most recognized Branding experts in North America has written some very kind words about my project and what we are up to!

The true heroes here are the people that have come out to help out, but I will talk more about that later, now its back to the drawing board!!
